Room 3 are Firewise
In Discovery this week we continued our learning around fire and fire safety. To see what the childen would do, I left two lighters in strategic places around the classroom (I kept a close eye on them!). I am pleased to report that when the children discovered the lighters they brought them straight to the teacher. I think Room 3 are pretty firewise.

Racing Stripes has his attitudes switched on
I want to share with you Cody's reflection on the movie Racing Stripes. We have been talking a lot about the attitudes of curiosity, open-mindedness, persistence and empathy. The acronym COPE helps us to remember them.
If we can think about switching these attitudes on as much as possible, then I think we have a winning formula for learning.
Cody sums it up pretty nicely...

Discovery - Nursery Rhymes and Presentations
Friday's discovery focused on the key competency 'Relating to Others'. The children brainstomed what they thought they would see in a group if this key competency was being demonstrated.
Their ideas...
conversations, waiting for my turn, sharing, listening, one person speaking at a time, working together, staying in the group, helping each other...
The task...
In groups the children learnt a nursery rhyme off by heart. They decided if they were going to make masks, what masks they would make, what materials they would use to create them, how they were going to wear them, whether they would use crayon, paint etc to decorate them. Together they practised their nursery rhyme to make sure it had high interest and impact for their audience. Some chose to include actions.
At the end of the session, we reflected on whether or not we liked working in a group. Lots of children enjoyed helping others, or receiving help. They enjoyed sharing with their friends and taking turns. Some of the children experienced it differently and didn't enjoy working in their group because they were bossed around, or didn't get a turn at something.

Jumping Jellybeans
JUMPING JELLY BEANS!!
Last week Julian entered a competition on What Now. He had to guess how many jelly beans in the containers. They shouted out our name on TV and said "Lila Corral won!" I jumped off the couch and scream because I was excited!
A few days later over 7000 jelly beans came in the mail. It was far too many for me to eat by my self. I decided to bring them to school to share with the wide school. All the jelly beans got shared out in assembly to all the classes.
Book Review
Our morning program has been very successful.
We were entertained with Marshall's speech (including speech cards) all about me.
Then Lila wrote a clever book review about her favourite book Splat the Cat. I have posted it here to share with you all.

A chance to win sports gear for Frankley School
Want to win a bumper sports prize pack for our school PE? Weet-Bix and
TV2 are giving schools nationwide the chance to win and it couldn’t be
easier.
This week’s lucky winners are Hikuai School, from Coromandel and they’re extremely excited to receive a sports pack full of premium rugby, soccer, netball and basketball gear.
There are still three more chances to win in the Weet-Bix and TV2 Schools Competition - simply read below to find out how to enter the draw.
Schools may be familiar with the popular All Blacks collectors cards found in specially marked Weet-Bix packs. This year, each card collected features a unique code that can be registered at www. weetbix.co.nz/codeblack. When registering, students can select their school’s name from a dropdown menu and attribute the code to the school for a chance to win sports gear.
There are still two more chances to win a $1,500 sporting prize pack, which will be given away over the next two weeks, so encourage your pupils to enter - all it takes is one code to be in to win! At the completion of the competition the school with the largest number of codes entered will win a $3,000 sports prize pack!

WOW!!! What tidy writing
Today Cody started his new writing book. He worked incredibly hard to keep his writing neat and tidy. His goal has been to write each letter with its own little island of space. How do you think he did? I think he did a magnificent job!!!
KC Award winners Week 2

Busting Our Deck
On
Friday me, Kyle, Dad and Mum started to bust our deck. We had turns using the
sledge hammer. On Saturday Dad got a digger from town. Then Esmond came over to
help us. When our deck is all busted we are going to make another deck but it
will be ENORMOUS!!!

Morning Program
Our new morning program starts next week. Each day, 6 children will present to the class a range of oral language activities. These include sharing personal news, reciting a nursery rhyme, what's in the bag, an item of local news, introducing speakers, all about me and a book review. The children have been given an activity to get them started and been assigned a day for their presentation. This information is coming home in their book bags. Below is an outline of our timetable for Week 3. Friday will still be show and tell. It would be great if you could remind the children of their task. It is not meant to take long but might spark a discussion at home. Thanks
